Apple Mail Setup
Apple Mail is fully compatible with a Splintermail email account, but a number of steps are required.
Add your Splintermail account
- First, open Apple Mail.
- Under the main menu bar, select "Mail"->"Add Account"
- When prompted with "Choose a Mail account provider...", choose "Other Mail Account..." and click "Continue".
- Enter the email address and password you use to log in to your Splintermail account, and click "Sign In". (Note, you will get an error)
- You should receive an error saying "Unable to verify account name or password," this is fine. You should also see new fields to fill in.
- For "Account Type", select "IMAP".
- For "Incoming Mail Server", enter
127.0.0.1
- For "Outgoing Mail Server", enter
splintermail.com
- Now click "Sign In" again. (Note, you will get a second error)
- You should receive an error saying "Unable to verify account name or password," again. No changes are necessary, just select "Next".

Configure Advanced Settings
- Under the main menu bar, select "Mail->Preferences".
- Open the "Accounts" tab, and click on "Server Settings".
- In the "Incoming Mail Server (IMAP)" section, uncheck "Automatically Manage Connection Settings", revealing new fields to fill in.
- For "Port" enter
1993
- Check the box next to "Use SSL/TLS".
- In the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" section, uncheck "Automatically Manage Connection Settings", again revealing new fields to fill in.
- Check the box next to "Use SSL/TLS", if it is not already checked.
- For "Authentication" select "Password" if it is not already selected.

Restart Apple Mail
In our testing, we have found that after the above configuration is complete, Apple Mail will not actually check for new mail when the "Get New Messages" button is clicked. It is necessary to close Apple Mail completely and restart it before it will begin to function properly.
